Religion: Discover the history of our faith and the creation of the church. Understand the importance of become and active Cathoic through community service and outreach programs. Attend question and answer classes with our pastor weekly and get the answers to the tough questions about our faith. Our 8th graders experience a Chastity Program during the 4th Qtr entitled Theology of the Body by Ascension Press. 2015/16 marks our 7th year using the program. Classes are taught gender specific in two classrooms.
American History 1860-1950: Travel back in time and experience the events that shaped our country as it is today. Learn how our political leaders achieved greatness. Understand how slavery came to an end in the United States. Discover the brilliance of the great inventors like Thomas Edison and Alexander Graham Bell. Fathom the history of booming business in the 1860's; the excitement of the Roaring 20's; and the crash of the economy in the 1930's. Learn our Constitutional rights and the qualifications to become a politician through the in-depth study of the State of Federal Constitutions.
Technology/ChromeBooks: Personalized learning with 1:1 ChromeBooks. Experience Google Docs, and Slides. Learn to make creative and impressive presentations. Students use our 3D printer to enhance STEM classes. Online testing on the chromebooks with ACT Aspire
Mathematics: Learn a solid foundation for algebra, geometry, and data analysis. Participate in hands-on investigation, cooperative learning, and research activities. Make connections to real-life situations, explore and discover practical uses of concepts in today's world. Develop skills in solving equations, using variables, and graphing with and without a calculator. Master the goals and objectives stated by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
Science: Learn the basics behind what makes your modern electrical technology work. Study electricity and magnetism. Discover how those things you use daily work. Take everything apart and put them back together again by studying atoms and molecules. Understand how time changes living things. Observe the world around you through fission and fusion, the solar system, stars, and galaxies.
Language Arts/Vocabulary: Students will sharpen their skills by studying the elements of grammar. Students will also have the opportunity to tap into their creative and intellectual side by writing short stories and research papers. Through the use of the Sadlier-Oxford Vocabulary Workshop series, the students will quickly improve and expand their own vocabulary.
Reading: Students have the opportunity to read a wide variety of literary works with the help of our Heath Literature series. Provided with four unique textbooks, each with its own theme, students will quickly improve their reading ability. Additionally, students will work with age appropriate novels and Shakespeare's work.
Physical Education: Students are exposed to a variety of individual and team sports with an emphasis on Physical Fitness
Music Art and Drama: Music opportuities include class weekly with our Music Director. Classes are assigned a week to lead and sing at weekly Mass. Weekly art classes allow students to share their artistic talents. Drama and Music classes are offered after school.
High School Preparation: Students are prepared for their high school education through placement test preparation and local high school shadow days. High school information open houses are held during the school year for students and parents to visit with students and staff and learn more about financial aid for Catholic high schools. Scholarship information is also provided. Many SJV student test out of Freshman classes and are placed in Honors and Advanced Placement courses. The class of 2015 had 77% of its class recognized as Presidential Scholars.
